How to use PowerApps to transform your business

Microsoft PowerApps is a low-code platform that allows you to build custom apps for your business. It’s simple, straightforward and innovative.

Using PowerApps, you can combine data from multiple software programs into your app. So, you can bring in Outlook people records, SharePoint lists and Power BI reports quickly and easily. Your custom app will work across mobile and web, and on all operating systems. Combine with Office365 and Dynamics 365 for a smooth app designer experience.

What is PowerApps Studio?

PowerApps Studio is the designer tool used to build canvas apps. This web studio is loaded with the latest updates from the Microsoft PowerApps team. It offers the most up-to-date experience and the newest app features. Use PowerApps Studio to easily build apps in your web browser, whether you’re a Windows or Mac user.

PowerApps Studio is the top authoring experience for creating apps on the platform. There are more features available on the web studio than on the desktop app, making it a faster and higher quality experience. Since the web studio’s release, PowerApps for Windows has been replaced as the top choice for app creation. PowerApps for Windows is still available, but is mainly used for viewing apps, with less authoring capability.

How PowerApps Studio works

Use PowerApps to make custom canvas apps with an intuitive, simple authoring experience. You’ll be taken to the PowerApps Studio, where you can build, customise, and manage your app. Here’s how it works, in a nutshell:

PowerApps Studio options hub

Your PowerApps Studio options are found in the menu in the upper left corner. Here you can choose to diagnose and fix issues, create a new flow in Power Automate, and more. You can also use custom connectors to add data sources, such as SQL Server or SharePoint on the Common Data Service. The available options will be tailored to your chosen canvas app template.

Add a new screen from a selection of layouts depending on the app type. Some of the available options may include Email, People, Calendar, Meeting or List. You can also edit the general settings like colour and icons and choose screen orientation.

App options hub

In the upper right corner, you’ll find the options and actions available for your app. Here’s where you can name your app, save your progress, and preview how your application works. You can also share your app to a channel in Microsoft Teams for instant feedback.

Properties dropdown

Under the PowerApps Studio options hub is the properties dropdown menu. This will show the available properties for your selected object. There is a wide range of options that may show here, including OnChange, Input, Fill and Items. View the full Microsoft list.

Formula bar

Use the formula bar to change, remove or add functions to your object. The bar has IntelliSense, so will help you entering text for formulas. There’s also a dropdown menu with a wide range of formula options for easy navigation.

App authoring options

The left viewing pane of the PowerApps Studio brings together tools to enhance the authoring experience. Toggle between different options for control including Tree View, Data Sources, Advanced Tools and Media. Depending on which you choose, you’ll see a variety of options. On the right, you can access controls for things like colour, size, and position. There is also an Advanced tab for more customisation.

If your canvas app has more than one screen view, click on the tab at the bottom left of PowerApps Studio to toggle between.

Screen size control

On the bottom right of your screen is the control for zooming in or out. You can fit to screen or adjust your view to help customise your canvas app.
